The way you run the reports depends on what type of accounting method you use - cash or accrual. As a non-profit we do accrual accounting and have to book the write-off on the date of service, not the date the payment is received. I think most dental offices use cash accounting though.

Insurance payment plans are difficult to manage though. Since the supplemental payments get posted on the insurance claim, you have to manually modify the payment plan totals each time you post a payment. Wish there was an easier way to do this, thankfully it doesn't come up very often for us.

Correct. In MySQL Administrator I clicked on Catalogs, then selected opendental from the list, then clicked the Maintenance button. Chose the Optimize Tables task, clicked Next, and it did the rest.
