Backup and Restore not Working Properly

Post by cneelley » Sat Nov 14, 2009 5:35 pm

Using version 6.8.14. I backup my office computer onto a jump drive, windows xp. Take home to restore. It seems to restore. However, when I try to open opendental again, it says it can't find the right version and tries to download off of the internet. So, I stop that and go to the opendentimages folder on mycomputer and run setup, and that works well. If I then try to backup onto my e-drive, on the home backup computer, it seems to back up the database folder just fine, but it can't back up the a-z folder at all. Am using windows 7 at home. Seems like it used to ask me where the a-z folder is when I restored the backup on my home computer, but it does not do this any more??

I have the same setup, I use windows xp and work and windows 7 at home. I am always backing up my database and a to z folder over the internet to my home. Whenever I want to play with a new beta version, I restore a backup via the following method.

I'm not sure how you are backing up and restoring your database. I was under the impression that the safest way to back up is to stop the mysql service and then copy your database folder (don't forget to start the service again). As for the images you can just copy that over at anytime. It is easy to write a simple batch file to do this on a regular basis.

As for restoring, just do this in reverse. Stop your mysql service and copy your database into the mysql data folder (don't forget to start the service again). You can copy your a to z folder anywhere and it will ask you when you open up your database.

I am using the built into opendental backup and restore program that is part of the management module. It has always worked well in the past. Now, it is not working well. Your method is a work around. Yes, it works, but it is easier and safer to use opendental restore, I wold think.
