You would need a software conversion from Softdent to Open Dental. That runs $750. I think our software is very easy to use and very stable. But, of course, I'm biased.

If you know what you are doing then yes you can use OPENDENT for free by compiling the source code etc. Learn to use OD by yourself.
If you want peace of mind during the transition then you can get the support from Dr.Sparks. ex. easy installation, training on the software etc
This gives you the info on GPL lincense
"The GPL license does permit and encourage charging for distribution and support"

that is for the unlimited support from OD staff as well as current updates and new features programmed by Dr S and others collaborating for the OD cause.Dr2th wrote:I read where it said the program is an open source yet the trial version is limited to 30 patients, but if you get the full version you have to pay a monthly fee, How can it be an open source product in thgis case?
like tdong said above, you're always free to tackle everyhting on your own, but if you do need any additional help, there is a separate fee involved. plus you have to 'manually' pull updates. (sorry i know that's not the technical term...)
