MySQL 5.5

Anyone using MySQL 5.5 yet? I am having trouble with MySQL 5.1 running out of resources and now current Ubuntu has phased out v 5.0, so I am trying out 5.5 tonight on a test server to see what happens.

Current windows version supported by OpenDental is MySQL 5.0, so this is certainly an upgrade, but according to Oracle, the speed performance is quite impressive with 5.5...we shall see...

most things work fine with V5.5...I was running and testing all sorts of functions...finally came across database maint that is incompatible with MySQL 5.5. So..for now, that nixes using that...

Jordan, any testing and plans to move to 5.5? Are the speed improvements anything you think would improve OD performance?

MySQL 5.0 is no longer even supported by Oracle, therefore I can't even install it easily on linux because it has been depreciated...so I think it would be a good idea to get it up and running on a new version for windows too since it is technically out of date as of May 2010.

I am working well now with MySQL 5.1 now on my server after increasing the open file limit... but the question still is....what about MySQL 5.5? It is supposed to be faster, is that something we will see in the near future?

Are you supposed to download the 32 or 64 bit version? I am running win7pro 64bit but still have programs that are running at 32 bit.

If you are running windows, just stay with the MySQL 5.0 version would be my opinion, I am only "forced" to run v 5.1 because 5.0 is no longer supported and maintained as a viable package in modern linux distributions as it is so old.

But if you wanted to download 5.1 and you have 64 bit windows, then the 64 bit would be the way to go. You can't use 5.5 yet for mainstream because some of Open Dental would have to be modified to keep up with the changes. Example, currently it crashes in database maintenance when using MySQL 5.5.

Ubuntu still does not have a .deb package. If you run Readhad/OpenSuse, etc then there are RPM packages ready to run.

I almost have a 5.5. deb package made...just haven't had time to see if it is going to work.

Why not download the .tar ball from MySQL site and install it? I'm still on Ubuntu 8.04.4 from 4 years ago. I have different versions of MySQL on the same Ubuntu to test. All I need to do is change a soft-link to tell Ubuntu which version of MySQL to run.

I could not get it to install from the tar ball ( I really don't know how to manually install things in linux if I don't have a script to run)

Thanks, I tired the manual install from the MySQL website a while back, and was having problems....but I am sure I just wasn't doing something right (obviously :p)
