XP and Windows 7 compatible?

Post by Nate »

I have 4 computers, on a wired network, all running windows XP Professional. I was wanting to upgrade the computer that acts as the server for OpenDental. Can I simply replace that computer with one that has a faster processor and running Windows 7 Professional without causing network issues? Is it compatable to have computers with different operating systems and still access the Open Dental Data base? Lastly will it matter if the new computer is 32bit or 64bit?

Thanks,
Nathan

A mixture of windows OSes is fine. OD is 32-bit, so will run on either 32 or 64. I would recommend you switch all your PCs to at least win7 because winXP is EOL April 2014.

As he said, mixture of OSs is fine. Win 7 64 bit would be the best current choice for a new computer. I don't think anyone even sells 32 bit computers.

Not entirely true

'Microsoft will extend support for Windows XP's anti-malware security until July 2015 and continue to provide updates to its anti-malware signatures and engine for Windows XP users, according to a TechNet blog post. '
