I created a "Referral" to an endodontist in a patient's chart.
OD created an e-mail to the patient:
-----Original Message-----
Regarding Patient: XXXX XXXX

To: XXXX XXXX
Subject: Referral To XXXXX XXXXXXX, DMD
You have been referred to another provider. Your summary of care is attached.
You may give a copy of this summary of care to the referred provider if desired.
The contact information for the doctor you are being referred to is as follows:
Name: xxxxxxxxx
Address: xxxxxxxxxxxxx
To view the Summary of Care for the referral to this provider:
1) Download all attachments to the same folder. Do not rename the files.
The e-mail cannot be sent because I haven't set up the patient portal. And it doesn't give me any option to delete it from the patient's chart. How do I get rid of it from the chart and how do I prevent OD from automatically generating these in the future?
You cannot delete web mail messages (they are part of the patient's inbox which is why we didn't allow deleting them). Lots of users complained about this so we implemented it for v15.4. http://www.opendental.com/manual/version15_4.html
The best thing about a boolean is even if you are wrong, you are only off by a bit.

So how do I stop this from happening in the future? I don't want OD to automatically create an e-mail for me. I would like to be able to decide if & when I want to send the patient an e-mail.
Also, if I am not using web mail, and the mail was never SENT, what's the point of it being in the patient's chart?
I agree and want to not have the summary of care emails that I don't want sent showing. I just referred a patient to an oral surgeon for 26 extractions, 4 quadrants of alveoplasty and 3 tori removals so now I got 33 of these emails cluttering up my chart.

I agree. Someone did not think this through when they automated this.
I can use Navicat to delete the entries, but I don't like doing that.
A preference for turning this feature off will be available in 15.4.
It will be located in EHR settings and will default to on if you have EHR turned on at the time of updating.
