So now the head is on version 5.8.

If we make changes how do we make submits to both branches?

you can only submit to the head branch...Jordan has to back-port it if he thinks it is a necessary change for a previous version.

Right. It would be dangerous and destabilizing to allow changes to a version that customers were actually using.
