Backup takes forever

Greetings
My backup takes well over 40 minutes to complete.
opendental data takes about 10 seconds
A-Z Folders takes about 20 seconds to complete all but the last .2mb.
It doesn't matter if the A-Z folder backup is 1mb or 60 mb.
The last .2mb takes well over 30 minutes to complete.
Is this normal?
It has been acting this way for months....now I'm using version 6.5.4

Thought #1 is that the progress bar is not reflecting reality. Version 6.5.12 fixed the error where backups would fail if the file had accidentally been set to read only. What version are you on? Is the behavior different with different backup software? How about with different backup media?

I'm sorry, I'm using version 6.6.4 (last backup), previous backups were version 6.5.x
I upgrade regularly.
I use SanDisk 8.0 GB USB microcruiser flashdrive.
The drive is half full.
A-Z Image folder is 3.2GB.
I backup 3-5 times a week.
I only use the OD backup system...restored to home laptop.
Same technique from the beginning.
Up until about 3 months ago, backing up took about 3 minutes.

The next thing I would try would be to use the exact same backup technique, but use a small USB hard drive. That would tell you whether your flashdrive is the bottleneck. It's a good idea to shake up your backup routine anyway for redundancy. You could later use the hard drive for archiving once per month.
