Print UCR on insruance claim

I had an odd situation today. The patient had a procedure (fpd repair by report) that was listed in our fee schedule as $0.00. I enter in a charge that I feel is justified for the procedure. When the insurance was printed, it printed out as 0.00 (as opposed to $350) because the "print UCR" box was checked on the insurance list.

1)Why would I want to do this?
2)What if I change a procedures fee on the fly - how would I catch it?
3)And, how would I change this globally as opposed to going in each insurance plan file?

FWIW - I have had several issues where I wished to change defaults on a group of insurance companies and have been unable to do so. A global default check off box for insurances would help this situation.

We are currently overhauling all of the insurance estimation, so your timing is impeccable. In fact, I was currently in that very section, so I revised the logic for 6.7. It is now as follows:

The UCR fee will only be used on claims if it is larger than the procedure fee.

I can't think of any reason to use the UCR fee if it's less than the procedure fee, because the procedure fee would just be lowered in the first place. In fact the UCR box might just be obsolete. It was originally there as a solution to PPO situations. But we now have an insplan type for PPO's so the UCR box may have very limited usefulness.

Some of us are still using the ucr button all of the time, and we like it. Please don't do away with it.
