OT: Laptop broke

Greetings,
My laptop (IBM Lenovo Z60M) fell off the table and broke a hinge off from the screen over the weekend.
An error message immediately appeared on the screen, "System Security - IBM Embedded Security hardware tamper detected".
The computer will no longer boot up.
Internet searches seem to point to a chip not on the motherboard.
This is a 5 year old machine, but it has stuff on it I don't want to loose (of course no back up).
My thought is that I could remove the hard drive and use as a slave drive to copy from on a PC.
Is this reasonable?
Has anyone done this?
Any idea what kind of cable I need (I have not yet opened my machine)?
Or...should I just take the critter to a repair shop and have them try to copy over to a portable HD?
Thanks.
