OpenDental on Microsoft Tablets

Post by Tom Zaccaria »

Anyone out there running OD on any of Microsoft new surface tablets with windows 8?
I am looking to upgrade from our Motion computing tablets.

Thanks,

We've tested it internally and can get Open Dental to run on surface so long as it is running Windows 8.
Windows 8 RT is not tested or supported (because it does not work). See http://opendental.com/manual/computerrequirements.html

It will run fine on windows 8 and 8.1. I have it running on both. Not surface tablets, but it would the same. They have to be surface pro of course, can't run on regular surface with Windows RT.

Must say it has been a struggle. Not a fan of Metro. Downloaded a classic startup.
Got OD downloaded and installed but not able to start it. Have Windows 8.0
Says, "OpenDental has stopped working. Windows looking for a solution to the problem. Which is doesn't find.

Need more time to fiddle with it. It was a challenge just to figure out admin rights on this thing.
Plus it is a lot heavier than I expected.

You need to set the graphics for the tablet to simple mode. You can either give us a call and get us connected to a workstation OR if you are on most recent v13.2, you can go to Setup > Computers > highlight the tablet and click the Use Simple Graphics button. Either that or start trying to get your tablet ready for Direct X. http://opendental.com/manual/graphics.html
The best thing about a boolean is even if you are wrong, you are only off by a bit.

Thanks. Will give that a try.
It sounds a lot better than me just throwing it out the window.

I've got it running fine, but I am not a big fan of the window resizing when you rotate the tablet. That is something I think you just have to play with to find the best configuration.

It works fine with the surface pro, won't work with RT. We had a problem with one of the windows updates that gave us problems. With the help of OD tech support, we rolled back the updates and stopped the automatic updates and it has worked fine since. Don't know if the that particular bug has been worked out.
