Open Dental no longer open source - Why?

Post by kellyb »

So in the unofficial Facebook group, this was posted:

James Russo: Open Dental moved to a closed source license starting with versions 24.3.44, 24.4.14 (beta) and greater.

Curious what prompted this change, given the origin, and part of the appeal, is it's open source nature.

Are there plans to continue the process by moving from an open database to a restricted (or access-controlled/closed/private) database?

Will the name be changing, perhaps to "ClosedDental"?

This change is explained at https://www.opendental.com/site/license.html. The "Open" in Open Dental refers more to the database than the code. The database is what everyone actually cares about and that is as open as ever.
